After School Club in Repton
An hour of after school baking every week
Our new After School Club at St Wystan’s, Repton
At the start of the Autumn 2019 term, I did a trial of 3 baking workshops after school at St Wystan’s in Repton, South Derbyshire
This proved to be quite popular and as the term progressed, the numbers in the group swelled. The children learn about weighing ingredients, what kind of ingredients there are, how to mix, beat, fold, blend, rub in, roll out and cut out shapes. They also learn about working in pairs and the importance of sharing their tasks. We discuss the importance of hand washing and food hygiene.
By the end of November, the number has now grown to 12 children whose ages range from 5 to 10 years old. So far, we have baked:
- Strawberry Cheesecake,
- Apple Crumble,
- Cheesy Biscuits,
- Chocolate Tiffin and to wind up the autumn term, we will be making
- Mini toad-in-the-holes and Christmas Cookies.
The children have the opportunity to weigh, mix and bake, although sometimes when time is short, they take their prepared food to bake at home. Sometimes, whilst the items are baking, we have food quizzes and discussions about ingredients and healthy eating.
I am hoping that we will have even more interest in the spring term and I am planning a programme which will have a mixture of sweet and savoury items.
